In my mind there’s just a few ways to get a really good deal on a mattress.  First, you can just go when there’s a sale at a retail store.  The mattress industry is known for its high markups and inefficiencies.  The consumer generally loses out and pays much more than he/she should for a nice bed.  Because of this fact, you would be remiss not to go when there is a sale.  There’s just no reason to pay full price for a good mattress or any mattress for that matter.  The cost to a manufacturer for a $2,000 priced mattress is probably closer to $250-300.  That’s a lot of markup for you.  Sales are pretty frequent and you can generally find them around certain holidays.  President’s Day and Memorial Day come to mind as BIG mattress sales time periods.  If you can wait until one of these sales time periods happens, then you should definitely do so and you will be rewarded very much financially.

You can also buy online to save some money.  There are companies like Tuft & Needle or Saatva that only sell online.  Remember all those markups that I mentioned earlier?  Well these guys try to cut a lot of that by eliminating the middle man.  Generally you can save some decent money by buying online.  You won’t be able to try a mattress out ahead of time, but they have good return policies and trial periods, so that’s much less of a concern.

You can also just hussle and try to negotiate.  If you are at a family-owned mattress store, this should definitely be possible.  I don’t think you’ll be able to do this at a place like Sleepy’s, but if you are at a mom and pop kind of store, then you will be able to negotiate.  Because there’s such high markups in the industry, there should be some decent room for negotiation when it comes to finding a final closing price for a mattress.

That’s about it.  You definitely want to take advantage of sales or buy online or negotiate if you want to get the best value for your money.  Good luck in your search.

Hopefully you have a decent idea of what exactly memory foam is, as I described in a previous article here.  Basically, let’s say you put your hand on it and applied pressure, the memory foam would give in and conform around you.  You can imagine how this might be applied to mattresses in a pretty cool way to allow for maximum comfort.  It’s sort of like the opposite of sleeping on a wooden board.  You of course want to find a good balance between something that is supportive and comfortable.  Not all memory foam is created equal.  Some memory foam gives in a little too much, some not enough, and others just right.

The main benefit of getting a memory foam mattress is that it contours to your body, which makes for a very comfortable experience.  If you can imagine sleeping on your side, then you know how important it can be to have something that gives in.  You don’t want a lot of pressure on your hips and shoulders when you are sleeping.  That’s why memory foam was such an interesting and monumental innovation in the sleep and mattress industry.  It allowed for the mattress to give in and form to your body, thus relieving any pressure points on the places that mattered the most.  Sounds amazing, right?  Well, it is actually pretty amazing, but it’s not without its words of caution of course.

A major complaint about memory foam is that you sink into it too much and it forms a crater over time.  You almost feel like you are off balance when you are sleeping.  While giving into your body is good, this effect is certainly not the best.  If the mattress develops a crater, then it’s just not going to be a very comfortable situation.  What you need to do is make sure the foam density is enough such that it will comfortable but also not develop a crater.

Memory foam also has the ability to sleep hot.  That is not good either.  It can also give off a bit of a chemical smell, which can go away but in some cases does not.  If you can get around these couple of minor points, then you just need to make sure that you like the feel of memory foam.  Most people do and end up pretty satisfied.  Therefore, it’s a really great option for you.

Here’s Wikipedia’s entry on memory foam (

It’s important to know what the different types of mattresses are before you make a real decision about which one to buy.  You should also know that all memory foam mattresses, for example, were not created equal.  The same thing goes with the other types of mattresses too.  So let’s get some basic information out of the way.

Latex- Latex mattresses are obviously made from latex, which is something you’ll see used in many other practical purposes (gloves, condoms, and much more).  Latex can be quite comfortable as it contours to your body quite nicely, it generally stays cool, and it has a nice, supportive spring to it.

Memory foam- Memory foam was created in the 1960’s by NASA, believe it or not (check out this article for proof!), for something obviously completely unrelated to mattresses.  However, after a couple of decades, companies started to realize what the applications could be for mattresses.  Memory foam contours especially well to your body and relieves pressure points extremely well.  It’s extremely comfortable in a lot of cases and people generally like it a lot.  There are downsides, of course, like the fact that it tends to sleep hot in some circumstances, and sometimes it can form a crater if the material is not up to snuff.

Innerspring- Generally, these mattresses are made from steel coils and they are the traditional mattresses you think of.  Depending on the construction of the steel coils, the mattress can be pretty responsive to your body but also supportive at the same time.  It really just depends on the quality of the innerspring set up.  Lots of people love innerspring mattresses, but it really just depends on the exact mattress that we are talking about.

Air- These are the lower-priced mattresses that you would have in your closet that could blow up for an extra guest that you might have stay over.  I probably won’t focus too much on these types of mattresses, because the best mattress will probably be one of the first three that I mention or some kind of hybrid combination.

These are the main types, so we can go on from here now that we know the basics.

The mattress industry has changed drastically over the past ten years.  The technology has changed considerably, as memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses have become ever-more prominent.  The entire value chain has been disrupted, as new companies are emerging that are selling directly online.  Furthermore, customers are now more empowered than ever and don’t have to rely on the advice of mattress salespeople.  The concept of an eco-friendly mattress is now more prevalent than ever, but as I’ve learned, “eco-friendly” doesn’t always mean what it says and a lot of times that can be a very misleading label.

I started this site to travel across the world to find the best mattress.  A lot of companies lay claim to the title, but of course they are quite biased.  I have learned that you cannot rely on the reviews you see online.  For that reason, I sought to do my own investigation on the subject and come up with an answer on my own.  So, welcome to my site, which will serve to try to answer the question that has plagued mankind since the very first mattress was invented.  I hope you enjoy the site.
