California Condors produce first egg of the season at World Center for Birds of Prey 14 February 2011 The World Center for Birds of Prey is home to 57 condors, the world’s largest captive flock. Currently, 19 pairs are expected to produce offspring this year. After hatching, chicks are raised by their natural or foster parents for about a year before they can be released to the wild. The Peregrine Fund’s release site is located at Vermilion Cliffs National Monument near the Grand Canyon. Currently, the world’s total population of critically endangered California Condors numbers 370. Of those, 181 are flying free in the wild. |

Record flock of Sociable Lapwings discovered in Oman 11 February 2011 Exciting news that a country record flock of 90+ Sociable Lapwings was present at Salalah in Oman on December 25th, 2010. The record was submitted to the Amazing Journey team by Spanish birder Daniel Lopez Velasco who was on a birding trip to Oman with friends when they encountered the birds. Oman is one of the best watched countries on the Arabian peninsula and there have been 105 previous records of single birds or small flocks of Sociable Lapwings occurring there between 1974 and 2010. |
Winners of The World’s Rarest Birds announced 29 January 2011 The winners of The World’s Rarest Birds international photo competition have just been announced. The competition, launched in 2010, aimed to secure images of the 566 most threatened birds on Earth for a new book highlighting their plight. The competition was won by Shane McInnes with an outstranding picture of the rare and critically endangered Kakapo. |
In search of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper 19 January 2011 A new Heritage Expeditions voyage ‘In the Wake of Bering’ will, in collaboration with BirdLife, take place in June/July 2011 which will incorporate a dedicated search for breeding Spoon-billed Sandpipers in the previously inaccessible Olyutorsky Bay area. Those customers making this pioneering voyage will split in to small groups and participate in searches for the birds under the supervision and guidance of BirdLife scientists. |
