Birdwatching trip report - Netherlands

Period: 29.3.2007-29.3.2007
Author(s): T. Falco

Key sites visited: Relaxing birdwatching for 1 day

With Jack and Mary from Florida i went to the Oostvaardersplassen for a relaxing day of birdwatching. We started at 8:45 and ended at 15:45.

The day began with a lot of fog, with sigth no more than 100 metres. Not good for birding. We skip the lookouts and so we missed some predators today (white tailed eagle, kestrel and marsh harrier) Instead we concentrated on the marsh birds  during a walk to on of the shelters. Spring was in the air. Rather quick we spotted Great, Blue, Marsh and long tailed Tit, Chiffchaff,  Great Spotted Woodpecker and Wren. Then we spotted two singing Bluethroats. One of my favorite birds. My first this year and a lifetime first for Jack and Mary.

During the lunch we had a beautiful view of mating northern shovelers. There for 200-300 northern shovelers present at our lunch spot.  We had a good view of a little ringed plover just 30 meters away.

Jack and Mary are not used to many duck and geese species so we concentrated on that after lunch. We saw a enormous pack of barnacle geese, at least 1.000 birds. And my first avocets this year. And a beautiful couple of smews.

We did not go to the last spot to spot some more species as i normally do. So we missed some species. But 56 species with rather bad weather conditions is not bad.
